The details in this story are sketchy. Mr. Houk initially swerved into the emergency lane to avoid hitting another vehicle. It is possible that he had been tailgating or, at least, not paying attention to the road ahead or he wouldn't have had to take the evasive action. Additionally it was not clear why he almost hit the SUV carrying the three men. Were they in the emergency lane or were they in the vehicle he swerved to avoid? Regardless of the initial details, the incident could have ended had not the parties in both vehicles gotten out to confront each other. This sounds like a conflict between a group of narcissists, who apparently did not care about the other driver or the consequences of their actions and a passive aggressive who refused to be bullied or it could have been a conflict between two passive aggressives who felt their honor was at stake. It appears that both drivers were equally responsible for this incident. Both drivers had numerous opportunities to prevent this incident from happening or to end it at any time before it built up to its tragic end. Mr. Houk could have waved or otherwise expressed his apologies for cutting off the SUV and refused to get out of his vehicle. The occupants of the SUV could have let the incident pass and continued on their way. After their initial confrontation, the occupants of either vehicle could have gotten back in their vehicle and driven away. Instead, both groups stood their ground until someone was killed. Mr. Edwards later pled no contest to second degree murder and was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison.
